The word retirement is ready to be retired. It was created for those who worked for 40 years at one job and then went on home armed with a gold watch and spent the rest of their days sitting on the verandah!
For me it has been a rehiring - by me!
To not have to enter the traffic bunfight into and out of Sandton every day. Appointments not before 9am and home by 4pm or sit it out in the movies or over a coffee or glass of wine with a friend.
To start the day with some journalling, yoga and meditation, some deep reading and then breakfast on the patio watching the birds in the garden sanctuary that has replaced the high rise office.
Choosing my day off each week and honouring that with something special - botancial gardens, lunch and a movie. Travelling to places that I long dreamed of such as Alaska and then Turkey later this year. Taking many flights to spend a precious 48 hours with friends in Whidbey Island and San Francisco. The costs are long forgotten and the memories with me forever. How did I find time to have a corporate career? I love Rehirement!
Like this tree in the grounds of Hever Castle, the branches represent the climb after leaving the corporate world. I have a long way to go and will soon talk about identity.
